Enter your rate and the hours you actually worked, and this separates the regular pay from the overtime and shows what the extra hours are worth.

Based on the FLSA 40-hour workweek.
Daily overtime rules in some states can pay more.

Ten extra hours, priced

At $28.00 an hour, a 50-hour week pays $1,540.00: $1,120.00 for the first 40 hours and $420.00 for the 10 beyond them. Across a year of that pattern it comes to $80,080, of which $21,840 is overtime pay and $7,280 is the premium on top of your regular rate.

That last figure is the one to hold on to. It is not extra money on top of the overtime pay, it is the part of it that exceeds your normal rate, and it decides how much of the federal overtime deduction you can use.

Where the figure goes wrong

Averaging across weeks. Hours cannot be averaged over a two-week pay period. Each workweek is counted on its own.

Paid time off counted as hours worked. Holiday, vacation and sick hours are paid, but they are not hours worked, so they do not push you past 40 for overtime purposes. A week of 36 worked hours plus 8 hours of holiday pay is 44 hours of pay and no overtime.

Comp time instead of pay. Private-sector employers generally cannot swap overtime pay for time off in a later week. That option exists for public-sector employers under specific conditions, not as a general practice.

Common questions

How is overtime calculated for two different pay rates in one week?
The FLSA uses a weighted average of everything you earned at straight time, divided by all hours worked. Overtime is then half that blended rate for each hour past 40, not the rate of whichever job the extra hours fell in.
Does a bonus change my overtime pay?
A non-discretionary bonus does. It has to be spread back across the period it was earned in, raising the regular rate and therefore the overtime already paid, which means a retroactive adjustment.
Are the first 40 hours ever paid at the overtime rate?
No. Only hours past the threshold attract the premium. The first 40 are paid at your regular rate.
Does overtime pay count toward Social Security and Medicare?
Yes. All of it, including the premium, is FICA wages. The federal overtime deduction reduces income tax only and leaves Social Security and Medicare untouched.
