The tips deduction lands on your return, so for most tipped workers it arrives as a larger refund rather than as bigger paychecks.

What the refund is worth

On $12,000 of qualified tips with $38,000 of income filing single, the deduction is $12,000 and it reduces federal income tax by about $1,390.

That is the deduction multiplied by your bracket, not the deduction itself. It is the single biggest source of disappointment with this provision, and it applies equally to the overtime version.

$6,000$6,000$720
$10,000$10,000$1,200
$15,000$15,000$1,770
$20,000$20,000$2,270
$25,000$25,000$2,770

On $42,000 of income, filing single.

What can reduce it to nothing

No federal income tax liability. The deduction is not refundable. Many tipped workers on lower incomes already owe little or no federal income tax after the standard deduction, and in that case this adds nothing at all.

An occupation not on the list. The Treasury list of 71 occupations is exhaustive.

Service charges rather than tips. A mandatory gratuity added to a bill is not a voluntary tip and does not qualify.

Filing separately when married. As with overtime, a joint return is required.

Reporting for 2026

From the 2026 Form W-2, box 12 code TP reports the total cash tips you reported to your employer, and a new box 14b carries the Treasury Tipped Occupation Code. Note that code TP is the total reported to the employer, which is not necessarily the same as your qualified tips figure.

If you already filed a 2025 return and your occupation was added when the list was finalised, you may need to amend to claim the deduction for the first time.

Common questions

How much will I get back from the tips deduction?
The deduction times your marginal rate. $12,000 of qualified tips is worth about $1,440 at 12%, not $12,000.
Is the tips deduction refundable?
No. It reduces taxable income only, so with no federal income tax liability it is worth nothing.
Is box 12 code TP the amount I deduct?
Not necessarily. It reports total cash tips reported to your employer, which can differ from your qualified tips figure.
I filed for 2025 already. Can I still claim it?
You may be able to amend, particularly if your occupation was added when the final regulations were issued in April 2026.
