What each hourly rate is worth after tax

Full time is 40 hours a week, part time 20. Figures use Texas, a single filer and no pre-tax deductions, so they show federal tax and FICA only. Change the state above to add state tax.

A full-time year is normally counted as 2,080 hours, which is 40 hours across 52 weeks. That figure includes paid holiday and paid leave, because those hours are still paid. If you are paid only for hours worked and take two unpaid weeks, your real year is closer to 2,000 hours, and the annual figures above are about 4% high.

How hourly pay is taxed differently from salary

It is not. The IRS does not care whether your pay was quoted by the hour or by the year. What changes is the arithmetic that gets you to the annual figure, and two practical things that follow from it.

The first is overtime. If you are non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act, hours past 40 in a week are paid at one and a half times your regular rate. That lifts your annual total, and because federal tax is progressive, the extra hours are taxed at your highest bracket rather than your average rate.

The second is variable hours. Withholding is worked out as though every pay period repeats for the whole year, so a heavy week can be over-withheld and a light week under-withheld. It evens out when you file.

Common questions

How do I convert an hourly rate to an annual salary?
Multiply the hourly rate by hours worked a week, then by 52. At $25 an hour and 40 hours a week that is $52,000 a year before tax. The standard full-time year is 2,080 hours.
Is $20 an hour a good wage after tax?
At $20 an hour full time, gross is $41,600 a year. In a state with no income tax that leaves about $35,300 after federal tax and FICA, or roughly $1,358 every two weeks. In a high-tax state it is closer to $33,000.
Does overtime get taxed at a higher rate?
Overtime is withheld at your marginal rate rather than a special overtime rate. For 2026 the premium half of qualified overtime may also be deductible on your return, up to $12,500 single or $25,000 joint, which you claim when you file.
Do unpaid breaks reduce my pay?
Unpaid meal breaks of 30 minutes or more are generally not working time under the FLSA, so they are not paid. Short rest breaks of 20 minutes or less normally are paid. Enter only paid hours above.
